Sardar Ballav Vai Patel was a famous freedom fighter and an Indian barrister and politician at the same time. He fought for the freedom of India’s Independence.

In the first three years of Indian independence after 1947, Ballav Vai Patel worked as Deputy Home Minister, Information Minister, Minister of State and Prime Minister.

He led the Bardoli Satyagraha, because of which he got the title of Sardar by the Indian women after the success of the Satyagraha.

Ballav Vai Patel is also known as Bismarck and Iron Man of India because he played an essential role in the geopolitical integration of India.

India was divided into many parts and princely states after independence.

In 2014, the Indian government decided to celebrate Sardar Ballav Vai Patel’s birthday as ‘National Unity Day to honour his contribution to making India unite.

Early life of Sardar Ballav Vai Patel

The Iron Man of India Sardar Ballav Vai Patel was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadid village of Gujarat, India.

His father, Jhaverbhai Patel, was a farmer and his mother, Lad Bai, was a housewife.

Patel had been working hard since childhood; he was hardworking since childhood.

Ballav Vai Patel worked with his father in childhood and studied at NK of Petlad High school, because of which ge had become a scholar in those days.

His father allowed him to study at college despite having a bad financial condition, but Ballav Vai Patel refused it.

He stayed at home for about three years and prepared to pass the district leader’s examination, for which he worked very hard.

However, he passed that examination with good grades.

Later he worked more to get the title of Barrister. From there, he started working for the nation.

He was one of the prominent leaders of the INC (Indian National Congress) and the founding fathers of the Republic of India.

He worked socially, fought for India’s independence, and played the most crucial role in unifying India.

He got early education from Karamasad and high school in Petlad. It took a very long time for ballav Patel to complete his education.

He completed the 10th examination at the age of 22, and In August 1910, he went to London for higher education.

He completed the 36-month advocacy course in 30 months, returned to India in 1913, and started living in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

He firstly worked as a Barrister in Criminal Law at the Ahmedabad Bar.

 

The political career of Ballav Vai Patel

From 1917 to 1924, he served as the Indian municipal commissioner in Ahmedabad. Later he became the municipal president from 1924 to 1928.

In 1918, he led a movement with farmers and landlords of Kairana, Gujarat, against the Bombay government’s decision to collect total taxes despite crop failure.

Because of that campaign, he was given the title of ‘Sardar’ means ‘Leader’.

 

Contribution of Ballav Vai Patel to make India unite

According to our history’s books, India was divided into 565 princely states when we got freedom from the British government.

Being a Home Minister of India, he asked all those divided states to join the Republic of India.

Expect Bhopal, Kashmir, Hyderabad and Junagadh, 562 princely states decided to become part of the Republic of India.

Because strong intentions of Sardar Ballav Vai Patel, all of them eventually agreed to join India except Hyderabad.

Because of that, he had to run ‘Operation Polo‘.

He was the leading candidate for President of the Indian National Congress in 1945–46.

Unfortunately, Mahatma Gandhi recommended Jawaharlal Nehru to become the president of the Indian National Congress.

Later the British government invited Nehru to form the interim government. However, Sardar Ballav Vai Patel could not become India’s first prime minister even though he was the leading candidate for the president post of INC.

He could not become the first Prime Minister of India, but he will always be the Iron Man of India.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was a Kashmiri Pandit, and Sardar Patel belonged to the farming community of Gujarat.

The common thing between them was, they both were close to Mahatma Gandhi.

Nehru was a modern mentality person, while Patel was a religious person who was interested in business.

Patel had good relations with Nehru, but both had different views on the issue of Kashmir.

Considering the Kashmir problem like a headache, Nehru wanted to settle the matter bilateral between India and Pakistan.

Twenty-five years later, after the election of the first Prime Minister of India, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari wrote. It would be better if Nehru were made the External Affairs Minister and Sardar Patel as the Prime Minister of India.

However, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the Government of India in 1991.

Nowadays, Sardar Ballav Vai Patel is not among us, but he will always be remembered. On 31 October, on his birth anniversary, Indian paid tributes to him.

We should not compare Sardar Ballav Vai Patel with Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh with Chandra Shekhar Azad or Ashfaqulla Khan with Ramprasad Bismil.

Because they did whatever they could do for the nation, Gandhi and Nehru both had different views on many different issues, such as the Kashmir Issue.

Sardar ballav vai Patel suffered from a heart attack because of which he died in Mumbai at 09.37 am on 15 December 1950, due to which he died.

After his death, his family did not get the importance that they should have got.

It cost about 3000 crore rupees to build a statue of unity or Sardar ballav Bhai Patel statue. On the other hand, it could not make even 100 crore rupees in the first inauguration.
